From everything I've read about UTIs and other problems with peeing, you'll want to schedule a vet visit.
There are several possible causes, from what I've read, including UTIs (although you sound as if it's a once-in-a-while occurence), stones, polyps, bladder tumors, and more. These are not all as bad as they sound.
This is a pretty good article to give you some possible answers:

Have his prostate examined. My Rat Terrier had an enlarged prostate at the age of 9. I had him neutered then and the size went down considerably, he now has no trouble at all and he's 17 years old. I know your dog is neutered already but that doesn't rule out an enlarged prostate.

Can I ask you whether he had problems with straining to poop? I read a bunch of vet sites when I first went through saved stuff for Mitch's post, and there was a lot of mention of poop-straining with enlarged prostate in dogs.

He always had "issues" pooping on leash. When he was 9 we moved into our first apartment and he had never had to poop on leash, he was really awful about it. He would hold it for DAYS, I'm not kidding. Maybe it was also the prostate? I'd never thought of that, nor did my vet ever say anything about it. Interesting.... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

What do you mean by "sometimes" and/or "several times in his life?" The reason I ask is because our male GSD at around 12 months had a pee problem. (not a poop problem, just for clarification). He seemed to need to pee often, and it took a LONG time to finish. We took him to the vet. It was nothing real real serious, but they detected a slight infection of some sort (it was SO slight they weren't exactly sure what type of infection it was). Several days on anti-biotics cleared it up in any case. In this situation, I didn't have a problem with knowing that he had a mild infection, but not knowing the exact problem. One of the trainers we work with is a very experienced vet tech, and she had already let us know that's probably the type of general diagnosis we would get. He's been fine ever since that week on anti-biotics.
Hope that little bit helps..

Thanks for answering. Every authoritative site I looked at about enlarged prostate in dogs mentioned that it commonly causes constipation and/or straining to defecate. The position of the gland in dogs makes fecal straining more likely than urinary straining. Some sources called it the most common cause of constipation in male dogs.
Your experience seems to back that up.
Thanks for the info.

My 3yr old intact male had a slight urineary tract infection that was treated with 'natural' antibiotics & some other supplements. One evening he needed to go outside to pee 3 x in an hour...something that he had never done before. He also seemed to take a while to go & one of the time didn't seem to go at all yet stood there trying. The next morning he seemed fine...but I took him & a urine sample to the vets.(I use Martin Goldstein's Smith Ridge Vet Clinic- nice to have one of the best in my neighborhood) He had a UTI. He was treated as stated above & has not exhibited any further signs of any problem. After the last urine sample his ph level was higher than usual. This was about a month ago & I need to bring another urine sample this week or next to be checked out to see that his ph level ( which was elevated even thou the UTI was gone )has dropped back down to normal. Take your dog to the vet..or at the very least take a urine sample to be tested. JMO

Thanks for all the replies. I just got back to town so here is some more info. He is altered. He has no trouble # 2ing unless he has blockage from Hickory nuts that I can't get them to stop eating. He is going to be 6 and had him since 6 months. probably had this issue 6 to 10 times I would guess. usually last a little more than a day. I think it is bladder infection. Could I try cranberry juice when this occurs? Thanks. He is fine again by the way.

Stones --- any crystalizing -- particularly recurrring like this, is a vet issue (if that's what it is). It really does sound like a strong possibility. JMO.
