I read the section about the AD rules here on this site, but I don't believe this particular question was answered.
Is using a harness rather than a collar for the AD permissable? Our GSD seems much more comfortable biking in a harness rather than a regular collar, and he is a steady biker in the harness even through distractions ranging from wild life to hikers (with or without dogs) to motorcycles passing by.
We are hoping to do the AD with him at the end of May, but need to know if we will have to switch to a collar for the actual event. If we have to use a regular collar, we will want to change that up soon during conditioning.
I believe you must use a fur saver collar on the dead ring - no "regular" choke collar, or flat collar is allowed. I agree, harness wouldn't hurt anything - you could probably ask the judge when you get there if he would let you use it. Train in the fur saver just in case he says "no".
Thanks Will and Molly. I'm disappointed...but glad I asked. So to the show collar it is. Molly, that's a great suggestion to ask the judge about the harness on the day of. Oh well - onward and forward....
Update: Like I said before, I'm glad I asked since this is our first AD "on our own." Good news - yesterday we biked him in his show collar (clipped to the leash where he couldn't turn out of it) and also worked so he was jogging along side of the bike - not pulling at all. (we weren't asking him to pull without us pedalling before, but he WAS pulling some...doing part of the work....)
He went the full 12 miles without hardly panting. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Now we just need to keep him in good condition until the AD (and of course, beyond...without over doing things)
