Got a little involved in a heated discussion on another board that might interest folks. The discussion was about non-biting protection dogs. As you can imagine the odds for each side weren't close to being even.
A woman joined the fray under an assumed screen name and identified herself as the Natl. Ex. Sec of the PPDA.http://www.ppda.org/
She is the owner of Rock Of Ages Kennel in Illinois. Her breed of choice is the Canis Panther, for which she sells as PPD's that are non-biting. She said that they have a no-bite policy at her kennel but goes on to say that her dogs WILL bite in defense of handler and family.
As you can imagine, things got interesting during the discussion but Ms Canis Panther remained pretty vague. We were enlightened by the info that she provided in that they train exclusively in muzzle but no bites are ever afforded.
After thinking about this for awhile I came to a conclusion that they must be doing some sort of table training to make these dogs so vicious that they are guaranteed to bite an attacker with gusto and fight them even though they have never been allowed to bite any type of traditional equipment.
Ms. Canis Panther assures me they do not table train their dogs so that leaves me a little suspicious in how they can sell dogs that supposedly will neutralize an attacker even though they havent been bite trained.
If anyone can tell me how to train a dog, in muzzle only and humanely, to be as fierce as any bite trained dog, please let me know.
I did a search on both the dog and kennel but came up with limited info. My main reason for the post is to find out if I am missing something training-wise, or is all this a bunch of hooey.
She did post a nice pic of a dog bareing its teeth though. The 6 pound chain and leather collar was almost as intimidating as the dog.
Can you post a link to the forum? Sounds like an interesting conversation. I went to the site with the burning of the bite sleeves. Too bad they didn't donate those to a local K9 unit or other club or something...

Never ever heard of this what is the point of the muzzle?
Do people actually buy them trained like this? To do what with is this like a sport? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
Hmmmmm! My big, mean PPD has a muzzle. The big, mean, bad guy has a baseball bat. What's the score?! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />

One of my favorite quotes from that thread was when one of the experienced protection trainers told the head PPDA phony that "Do you realise that you have just joined a "protection dog forum" and not a "I will frighten you forum"
Just what I'm looking for in dog training <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />
I love the way these people view themselves as visionaries of protection training. First, they make up a breed b/c they can't manage to get thier hands on a decent protection dog; then they name it the Canis Panther....come on, can't you think of something better than that; then they develop this revolutionary style of protection training that has no basis in modern animal behavior or reality, for that matter. Rational muzzle work is one thing, this is something entirely different. What a bunch of Mickey Mouse BS.....
