I have a 5 month old bitch...also an intacked male....would like to know when i could expect the puppy to go into season...i have seen no indication that she may be at this time...for peace of mind, i would like to know when, typically, they reach the age.
its hard to say. i've seen them come in heat at 6 months 9 months and at a year...i have a female right now that 14 months old and still no heat....but i can say most of my pups have been 6 months old...

My female came into heat the 1st time at about 1 yr. The 2nd heat was 7 months later & the next 4 months later & the last one was 6 months....she has just turned 2 1/2 yrs old. So it is not always like clockwork even after the 1st heat. Some females come into heat every 4 months & most are closer to the 6 month cycle. I have a 3 1/2 yr old male & let me tell ya, your male will let you know when she is coming into heat. But keep a close watch when he starts to take alot of interest. She may or may not bleed that much in the begining or have the vulva swell that much either. So be alert. Most heats last about 21 days with the most critical breeding time between the approx.10 & 13 days. You will need to seperate them expecially during that time. I only had to physically seperate them for about 5 days but up to that point & after my male was well behaved & if he looked like he was ready to jump on her, I would just say no & he would stop. But if you can't keep you eyes on them the ENTIRE time that they are together....just in case...then seperate them the whole time. My 2 were able to lay on the den floor on their beds without incident the whole time except those few days when he just couldn't sit still... then they were seperated. It was not fair to tease him, so he was seperated with one inside the house or crated while the other was out. I did, however put them outside together with one in the kennel & one loose in the fenced yard during most of this whole time, but I was able to watch them the whole time 'cause then can still tie between the kennel wires, although mine didn't even try. You don't want a female under 2 yrs of age being bred. So be very careful how you handle this. You also may want to note that your male may go a bit off his food during this time, also. Mine would eat all of his dinner meal, but not always eat much or all of his breakfast meal. Good luck.
Yeah, mine just finished what for me seemed to last for two months... The pre-menstrual month and then the month of Doggie Underware. Unfortunately my carpet is cream in color.
She was 9 mos. I knew it was coming when my brothers clipped beagle kept trying to mount her, he had never done that before. That and she was just a nut ball. I wish she would be more like my parents english springer, she doesn't show any signs and she keeps her self super clean. Oh well, I can't wait for the next round
My girl was between 10 - 11 months old when she had her first heat. Be prepared for abnormal behavior during the first cycle or two. My girl was in for 30 days, had a false pregnancy and was exhibiting some very unusual behavior. She became reactive to things she didn't previously care about or notice. It was so bad her first cycle I almost got her spayed. Some friends talked me out of it and I am glad they did. Her next heat was totally normal with no strange behavior and it lasted 22 days.
I am so thankful that her strange behavior has not returned.
I have some friends who don't work their girls when they are in season. I am so thankful I don't have to worry about that. In fact, I prefer to work my girl when she is in. That is when she has some of her best performances.
