Any suggestions/remedies for tracking dogs with allergies? I have a dog ready to compete - spring hit - he started sneezing. Naturally we've seen the vet but I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions.
Thanks so much!

Ya I have a suggestion. My girlfriend's dog has allergies too and the vet recommended Benadril (spelling..? ). Don't know if your vet may have suggested that to you or not but it worked for her 8 y.o. pup. Test it out once or twice before you compete to find out if your dog gets drowzy on it or not.

Molly is right, my do has the same problems and my vet has him on 2 pills 2 to 3 times a day. he also has a skin problem so i give him Der Caps 100s and he has a nice shinny coat, of course he only has this problem in the summer. Max is also a tracker and does SAR and has many tracking titles so it works. he is also on a better food so you might need to try that....well i hope this works or helps

If you're going to use Benadryl on a tracking dog, it's best to moisten the dog's nose/muzzle with a few squirts from a water spray bottle before tracking.
The Benadryl's antihistimine action dries mucousal surfaces which decreases a dogs ability to discern scents.
Just an FYI.......

Thank you soooo much - that's exactly the kind-of tips I am looking for - the things the vets don't think to say b/c they are not out tracking their dogs and little things like that, which make a hugh difference in a tracking dog are not things that come to mind b/c 99.9% of their clients do not need that info. Thank you. I hope others will pop in with more tid-bits of important info.

Hi Bradley,
The 2 pills, 2-3 times a day - is that for Benadryl? I've had mine on Benadryl -50 mg, 2x. I'll check with my vet - maybe I coud just up his does - until he gets through his test.
Also, I am new to AKC tracking (we've been competing in Schutzhund). I've been told the tests pretty much stop during the summer months b/c it gets too hot - is this true?

I believe vitamin C also has antihistimine properties. My dogs get at least a 500 mg tablet of ester vitamin C per day and many people give more. My Mal's allergies don't tend to be as bad and vitamin C doesn't make them sleepy like Benadryl can.

Molly,
Be carefull not to overdose your dog. 50mg is an awfull lot to give. Using some human meds for dogs is fine but the dose has to coincide with the weight of your dog. Call your vet as they should know right off of what dose to give for a certain size dog. You may be doing more harm than good.

Hi, The new advice given to molly has helped me lots also. I also give my GSD ester C and what Benadryl the vet told me to give. Max gets 2 Benadryl 2 times a day he weighs 85 lbs. i have been tracking him for a schH. tracking title this coming weekend and i've noticed hes tracking high. know one told me to wet nose but i should have known to being hes a SAR dog and we do a lot of nose wetting on a track.
