I have been reading up on vaccinosis and I don’t want to give my dog any unneeded vaccinations but we have to board him this weekend and he is overdue for a bordetella (kennel cough) shot. I personally know the owner of the kennel and I don’t want to put him at risk as well as my dog and the other dogs there. I don’t have anyone that can house sit for me so boarding him is the only option. Am I being stupid for wanting to board him without vaccinating him?
IMO, the bordatella vaccc. is a bit unreliable; I've had animals get it who have been vaccinated against it, and then I've had an unvaccinated dog be just fine, even though he'd been exposed in a kennel setting. My cousin's vaccinated dog got kennel cough at my house from a kitten, supposedly, that I had just adopted from a pound. This cat was so sick, I didn't think she'd make it(several ailments, severely malnourished, etc.-not just kennel cough). None of my other animals (non-vaccinated) got sick at all. On the other hand, I haven't heard as much about bad reactions to that shot as much as others. These are just my anecdotal, (somewhat)educated thoughts, so please take them as such!
Honestly? Only get it if you can't find a place that will board him without it... I don't give my dogs this vaccine. I hate it and think it's stupid that kennels require it. I mean you do realize here that we're talking about something that runs it's course like the common COLD don't you? This is not a dangerous thing even if your dog does get it, it's just another way for vets to make money.
I board with trusted acquaintences that do not require this vaccine.
Oh, wanted to add... I've had dogs for 23 years now and have NEVER vaccinated for Kennel Cough once. I have also not seen one case of it. And I board at places that don't require it, at LEAST 3x per year.
Jenni I agree, I had never given this vac to my dog and it was fine, even if left in a kennel where all dogs had vaccinations. The weird thing was: my dog was never sick and half of the vaccinated dogs got the caugh...
I also had the experience to see very young pups ( 2 weeks or so) get this and couple of them died, some of them did not get it at all.
So basically. It really ,IMO, depends on a dog.
Most pups/dogs get kennel cough from the vaccine. I have seen this over and over. Happened to one of my pups brothers. They vaccinated him, he came down with it 10 days later, gave it my pup who was visiting. It was interesting for me to see that my pup had a very mild form ..she is raw fed (another brother that was visiting got it full force...kibble fed) and none of my unvacinated dogs came down with it.
Sadly, what happens is a kennel may decide to take in an unvacinated dog in thier kennel, a vaccinated dog likely sheds the vaccine or gets it from vaccine and it goes through the kennel (and many vaccinated dogs still get it!)...and they blame the unvaccinated dog.
There was actually a study done at a shelter. The homoeopathic nosode for kennel cough (that might be an option for you?) was WAY more reliable than the vaccine. When used in the shelter, those that got the nosode were fine, those vaccinated came down with kennnel cough. Think this is in Catherine O'Driscoll's book.
My wife made the reservation and we didn't vaccinate him. The lady at the kennel said he was good to go and they usually check the dogs records. Thanks to all for the peace of mind.
Well as far as vaccines go this is a mild one. It is usually given through the nose as opposed to sub dermal. The thing is, there are around 100 different forms of kennel cough and the vaccine only covers a couple. Some vets and kennels require it for boarding. I ended up doing it so I could board my dog if necessary with the only vet in my area I trust. I won't do it again, but I don't think it's detrimental as a one time thing.
