Hi everyone, it's Karen Cushman, the distraught "poster" from end of March-early April. Well after a very heartbreaking time letting our Simba go in early April, my husband has come home with a brand new male shitzu that is only 3 months old. His name is Kimba and boy talk about not remembering the early stages...whew...never crate trained and have forgotten all the work involved in a "puppy".
I am open to any good advice that can be given to a new owner that has not had a puppy in 16 years. We do have a crate for him and he's been okay with the whole "potty" training thing except he loves to go out, run like mad and then lay at your feet vs. doing his business...then not 2 minutes after we are in the house he hurries to a corner and poops...oh and I need really good advice on discipline, I've heard so many different stories...not sure what works nowadays. Thanks all.

Karen, I just had a thought about the housebreaking issue. What if you put a light long line on him in the house when ever he is not in the crate? That way, you would be able to scoop him up real fast & take him outside when he heads for that "special" corner.
Thanks guys, I will check out the links. We are starting to see his "schedule" which has helped us make sure he's out more often and for longer periods of time. If I walk with him in the yard, he has no chance to lay at my feet and look up at me. Some good days, some not so good but we are watching him more closely. When you've had a 16 year old animal that new the rules and his place and time, barked to go out, pretty much ran the household...it was a rude awakening when the new pup just squatted on the new coach to go pee...we had forgotten the work involved and the attention a pup needs. I will read up on the links for tips. Thanks so much!
