After consulting three Vets, and countless dog people including the breeder it was decided that it was in the best interest of the dog to put him down.

I am so sorry. I salute the decision to end his suffering, despite your own. I was following your posts, too, and I know how much you put into that decision. I am always grateful that we have that ability to give our friend a painless end.
I'm very sorry to learn about Koach. Once in a while we are privledged to be touched by a pure soul, celebrate his life and remember the wonderful times you had together.
Thanks to all of you and those who have sent private messages. My wife and children and I are all deeply saddened and we are deep into the grieving process. Thank you all for the kind words and all of the support.
Koach was a birthday present from my wife who was deathly afraid of big dogs. I waited a life time to get him and it hurts so bad to lose him so quickly. Koach taught my wife a lesson on how loving, affectionate and protective big dogs can be. She is already making plans for us to get another GSD. The Vet's office was wonderful and Koach went peacefully in my arms. No fear, no concerns, no worries. He was a good boy until the end. Again thanks for all the support.
oh terry, better half, and little ones:
it is SO HARD to hear Connie's wisdom that it's a privilege to be able to give our great friends an easy, floating passage. but it is SO TRUE (and i'm sure i won't be able to hear it when my next dog's time to go arrives). but try to keep it in mind.
it is our ultimate and HIGHEST obligation when we take on the responsibility of an animal's life, though also the most difficult. peace...
Terry, sorry for you & your family's loss. Try to focus on the good & fun times with him & let those memories carry you all thru this difficult time. He will be with you always in your heart. He will be waiting for you at 'the bridge'.
I am so sorry for your loss. You made a difficult and courageous decission. One thing that helps the grieving process is to make a memory book. Include a few of his favorite toys, his collar and, if you have any, put a little of his hair in an envelope and put that in the book. Have each family member write about some special time or thing they remember. If your kids are too young to write, have them draw pictures and tell you what to write to go with their illustrations.
