I owned a Pike son that Will and Ed later owned. Very tough, dominant male. He could be handler agressive as I warned Will about, so he was prepared. But boy did I love that dog, lol.
Yep, Angela's advice saved me from more than one bite with that dog for sure ( I owe you a beer, Angela! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> ).
He would have been a *super* dog to have owned from puppyhood where I could have cleaned up the dominance issues at a younger age.
As he was. he was still a good competition dog and an excellent ppd in the same package.
Definately a "real" dog and worth training to a high level.
Ana was a Pike daughter and I'm pretty sure she shows up in some of Ed's videos, though I don't know if she's ever shown working. You might ask Ed directly, since he's had other Pike offspring in his kennel, and perhaps his videos, as well.
Seen a few Pike sons at work. All were very serious in protection. Some had some handler aggression.
I have a Pike grandson who shows a lot of dominance and has some handler aggression. I've got my fingers crossed we can work thru that coupled with bad training and be able to further his titling. Wishful thinking...
Personally I like the "Pike" blood
Guess the biggest thing is establishing rank with the dog (or any dog with dominance issues) at a young age.
I have a ShcH3/IPO3 son of Pollux (who is a litter mate of Pike). He is an extrodinary working dog. Compact, tons of drive, stable, etc. He is a dominant male but interacts normally with other dogs and people. He is a VERY HARD DOG!!
He will give you 200% everytime out!! Easily excited and is 'on' all the time. Is the type of dog who would work till he dropped so handler must be aware in this regard.
As was mentioned by someone else about thier Pike dog, our boy is multi-talented too... he is a top sport dog but also an awesome PPD! Stable enough to be in with the family, focused enough to work, and flashy enough to perform! Lots of power & nice full grips. He is a GREAT dog and with lots to offer the breed.
I have many good things to say about this bloodline (but as with anything there are pros & cons dependig what you are looking for). He is a LOT of dog... definately not for an inexperienced handler!! VERY hard, incredible courage, and sharp... can be handler aggressive when in drive but I have not found this to be a big problem overall. It comes more from his excitement and he is easily focsed on the quarry!
We love this dog! Tough! Great work ethic! A joy to handle!! ...and he passes his best qualities to his pups!
