I am about to be back go back to the states and I am looking to get a dog for schutzhund or ring. I have trained American Bulldogs for OB and catch work, this will be my first attempt at training a dog purely for sport. I have two questions.
1. Should I look for a Malinois or a GSD?
2. Should I get a puppy or a trained dog to help ease me into the sport?
Price is a factor, I am about to start a college program with the Army and will have lots of time to train or get trained depending on how I go.

Oh boy, which breed boils down to personal preference. Working GSD, Mal or Dutchie can all do sport. An older dog will cost more than a young dog, but is less of a crap shoot! I personally love puppies & wouldn't want to miss that stage of life. I think a very very important consideration is the breeder you go with. Not only because of quality & guarantees, but for support. My breeders (Dean & Karla Calderon) are there for me every step of the way. They patiently answer all my stupid questions, are extremely supportive, and are very generous with good advise. I know I can count on them through the life of this dog!
Well depends what you want to do. If you do some searching you can probably find a dog suitable for schutzhund for 1G$ or so. Ring going to go with a Mal . I just dont like pups , so I spent 3 months looking and settled on a young GSD from a rescue. He is suitable to have fun at club and for home PP, which is my bag anyway. Most of the european imports I found here( allready in the US) were 2-3G$ , young adults. If your pockets are deep you can go with a titled dog and try and put higher titles on them . Remember , just because you pay more for a dog doesnt mean it is a better dog, and all pups are a crapshoot, even out of repeat breedings. Good luck
