Been viewing this sight for a couple of years studying and have purchased some of Ed's DVD's, that I have been trying to apply to my Rott that I got at 8 weeks old.
Today, my 17 year old daughter went up to my dog that was lying down. She stood over him and started petting him. After a couple of seconds, he starting growling at her. When he did, she clasped her hands over his muzzle and said, no. He then shook his head loose and nipped her. My daughter, who is not easily intimidated, grabbed him again and wacked him and said no, again. My dog this time barked at her at nipped here again. I intervened by grabbing around the muzzle, slapping him on the nose and saying no.
A few minutes later, when everyone calmed down I got my daughter and dog together, and we had a group hug. Seemed like every thing was fine.
Any advise? Does it appear that I have done anything incorrectly?
Group hug? Seriously or metaphorically? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
Your daughter shouldn't have been standing over him, and the dog seems to have some dominance issues. If he truly only "nipped" her, it would seem that he was doing this to serve as a warning, rather than hurt her. Is he always like this or is he just starting to behave this way (teenage dominance? insecurity?)?
Jenni & Candi, thanks for the replies.
It seems that he favors me and has since day one. Most likely since I spend time with him when I am at home. He does not "rule the roost". He has been crate trained since day one. The first month, we kept his crate in the bedroom and then moved him to the garage, where he has been since.
When I am home he comes out of his crate and spends his time in the house under the a/c vent. I can tell that he is jealous, when I hug my wife or kids he does not like it and tries to jump and nip them. The only other aggerssion that he has shown is when someone other that me goes near his food when he is eating he we growl(which he has been repremanded for).
