Hi all, Hope you can help. I have a 2 1/2 year old trained SAR dog. He also has 2 AKC tracking titles. I've just started doing schH tracking with him but i'm having 2 problems with him. one he takes off so fast at the flag that he tracks from 1 to 3 feet off the track and 2 he air scents. he wont keep his nose down. he does find all articles and does finish the track but its not a good Sch. track. i have been going back to puppy tracking with food and keep him close. is this what i should be doing? what else can i do to get a cleaner tracking out of this dog?

yes I would "start over again" with food in every footstep - teaching him to get his nose down and search the footsteps, get rewarded for this kind of searching by finding food in every footstep - he should progress faster since he's not a pup and was previously trained - you don't have to teach him how to track, just how to track in a different manner. You can do serpentines (use markers so you know exactly where the track goes) and rounded corners - using the food to make sure he is rewarded for tracking in the correct manner. When he is checking footsteps reliably, then start taking food away. There are many different trainers on this board and as many different methods that work for them - this is just how I would start your dog retraining in Schh tracking.
Thanks Molly for you advice, this is what i thought i should do. i guess if i use some other word for this type of tracking it wont screw up his SAR training. right?
