I have my first GSD puppy and as I was dropping her off to be spayed she spotted on their floor. what are the odds of her going into heat like that.. anyhow, that was friday may 12th. I have planned on a Memorial day picnic w/my friends who have male intact dogs. Is it safe to bring her or should I leave her at home? I haven't seen any blood droppings today and she doesn't seem to be licking herself. How do I know when she is finished and no longer seeking to have a mate? Her vulva is swollen but not like it was last week. I am leaning towards leaving her home, but it would be a much needed release for both of us. She has been whiney and anxious.
thank you for your advice.
The average estrus cycle is around 3 weeks, so she would likely still be in heat by this weekend. Either keep her on a very close leash (no more than a 4-6 footer) and absolutely watch her like a hawk or leave her at home. Many intact male dogs will go nuts around a female in estrus and even if it doesn't directly cause conflict with your female, a fight might break out. Might not be the best thing to have to deal with over the barbeque, deviled eggs, and potato salad...

thanks for your reply.. one last question, how do i know when its safe to resume playtime with the boys.
is it when her vulva is back to normal?
thanks again and you guys are great!
The no 1. question is do you know the day it started, if so
I would count 4 weeks from this day to be sure, I had female that never swelled much, so this is not always a good indication, rather be safe than have an unwanted litter.Alternative is to have a test dog, if she is still flagging (moving the tail), acting interested you will know
it is still to soon, make sure you do this test on leads,
they are very quick. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
thanks. i saw the droplets of blood on friday the 12th. my friend who breeds cairn terriers and now has an airdale, wants to use my gabbi as a teaser, or as i said a fluffer, so they can collect his semen. Im guessing she will still have some sort of lingering scent next week.
thanks for the info and she'll be sequestered til the 2nd week of june.
