My 6 month old GSD will now chase things underwater. He submerges his entire head and body underwater and tries to bite things. Leaves, sticks, coconuts, fish, whatever he can see underwater he will try to bite it. While I think this is totally cool is it bad for ear infections or anything? I am in Hawaii so the sea water is pretty clean.

Wow, what a very cool pup . Maybe, when you guys are done swimming, & after he shakes real good, you could gently stick cotton puffs in his ears to absorb any extra water? Other than that, I would think the salt water would be good for the ears, (like a mild astringent, maybe?).

My old gal Oxana dives in the pool all the time. If her kong is in the pool, doesn't matter deep end or shallow, she'll go get it then go to either the steps or the swimout. She's been doing this for years and never any problems, but it's also a cholorinated pool, not the ocean. Last summer she kept diving until she was around 2 wks away from whelping. Great exercise for them.

My Malinois likes to act like a porpoise at the creek on the trail we go to and ducks his head up and down. I have no doubt he'd dive if the creek were deep enough. I swear, he's part lab...that's awesome you can swim all the time down in Hawaii.

yes, it doesnt really get too dirty in the ocean. I took him down to a stream once and his ears were filthy after. Way too much mud.

The best story so far... I was talking to a friend of mine yesterday about this diving underwater thing and he said his Lab has been doing it all his life. This lab had accompanied his owner on a boat out to a remote sandbar in Kaneohe for an afternoon picnic a few years back. The dog was playing and running around the exposed sand when he obviously smelled something, then ran to the edge, and head first jumped off and dove underwater. He came back up some time later with a live thrashing baby hammerhead shark in his mouth. A baby hammerhead shark is no more than about 5 pounds dripping wet and the story goes the dog ran around in circles with the shark and would not release it to anybody. It took them about 45 minutes to get the dog to release the shark. I think its crazy the dog seemed to know there was a shark off the edge. Good thing it wasn't the baby's mother instead of the baby!
Have a Happy Long Memorial Day Weekend all!

That is a great story. Years ago we were lucky enough to spend a week at a cabin with a dock on a lake. One day we were all sitting on the dock drinking beers & tossing the ball off the dock for my Zorba. The dog would jump off the dock swim out get the ball swim to shore climb back on the dock & bark until someone tossed the ball again. Well, a couple of strangers were paddling by in a canoo when old Zorb decided to jump off the dock swim up to the boat & tried to do a hold & bark around & around the boat. Really funny at the time (but not as good as the shark story).

When I was a kid I had a labrador that could swim underwater. She could retrieve an article up to about the size of a glass bottle or a brick to about as deep as five feet. She woud disappear completely (the water wasn't very clear) and stay underwater for around 20 seconds or so. She never had any ear problems, but then Labs are probably built for it.
