We have brought a new addition to the family that is only about 9 weeks old and the other day she had a runny nose and a non productive cough. we took her to the vet and he said that she had a cold and gave us some medicine. The medicine worked, but now the issue is this. We also have a three year old lab that has been coughing like she wants to vomit or something is stuck in her throat. She has these fits throughout the night. I think she has kennel cough from what I have read about the symptoms. But the cures are vast and all different. What do I do about the cure and should I worry about the puppy since she is possibly the one that might of brought it into the house?
It should run its own course in about 3 weeks, but most vets will prescribe a cough suppressant and some sort of antibiotic as a precaution (even though most of KC isn't bacteria-caused, but from a virus). But other than that for your older dog, just give plenty of rest, making sure she's got plenty of water, and most importantly, keep both of them away from other dogs as it is highly contagious since it is air-bourne. This is going to be tough for your little pup since now is a good time to get her used to other dogs. I would just socialize her with everything and anything else for a couple more weeks and then if you plan on socializing her with other dogs to start doing it about a week after both of your dogs stopped showing any symptoms...
