Sure, some dogs are only dog aggressive. Some dogs are also dog aggressive only when they are on leash. There are a lot of articles on this website about dog aggressive behavior and how to curb it...you may also want to get Ed's DVD on Dominant and Aggressive Dogs.
absolutely. Our rescue GSD was very dog unfriendly, but would let our 20 year old blind arthetic cat push her away from her food dish. It was hilarious to see her "wait" for the cat to get done feeding from her dish! Also very good with babies/kids/vistors - everyone but other dogs.
Ed's adivice to us then is mine now - basic obedience training. The dog absolutely has to know that he is not the one calling the shots. We bought the tape, read the posts, and worked on it along time.
she is far better now - in fact he has actually ignored a couple of stupid little dogs who ran out their front door to come "attack" her - before she would of killed them if she could earlier in life
Our rescue is mostly aggresive towards other dogs, but she also was aggressive at times, or at least dominant towards our kids when they were younger, and is territorial, so cannot be trusted with many guests. I would keep a good eye on the dog. Ours is vastly improved after groundwork (not as strict as Ed would do), reinforcing basic obedience, positive enforcement for calmly ignoring other dogs and and severe corrections when needed for aggression.
