When I worked in construction project management, we'd sometimes have our steel crews stay in a motel. I negotiated with the owners of the motel for a good rate, as the guys would be in town for sometimes up to 3 months.
Don't know what you'd be looking at money-wise with rent, deposit, etc at a rental house/apt, but I remember we were charged about 800 a month for the guys.
Just my $0.02 for an avenue for you to explore. Good Luck.

One other option is checking out privately owned properties, not rental agencies.
Check out classified-ads and if you will be staying in a college or university town, check out the school's web site. I know the U of I has a housing section on their website. You do not have to be a student to list or rent from these ads. Basically, it is just a great resource for finding housing other than the typical "A&B Property Management" places, who, IMO can tend to have those lengthy "LISTS" of whatcha can and can't do, yadayada...
Again, good luck!

PS.
I lived in a TENT on my parents land for a month when I moved back to Iowa. I was looking for housing and the plan was to stay with them. When they told me the dog would have to stay outside, I asked if I could too. They didn't have a problem with it and neither did I. Actually, camping out was pretty fun!

I manage three rentals for clients.
This is what I suggest. When you go for an interview, have your extremely well-trained dog along with you. Have the dog sit or down throughout the interview. Absolutely go for private rentals (as opposed to mgt. companies where the interviewer probably has no authority); have with you written testimonials about your dog's behavior; offer an extra damage deposit (while saying "of course, dogs don't stink up a place like a litter box can, or claw at windowsills and wallpaper, but I completely understand if you want to ease your mind......").
This can be done! One place, a six-unit Victorian, started out with the owner saying "no pets," and then he let me rent a unit to a woman with a small quiet dog (barking being a big consideration to the owner). Since then, we have come to the point where four of the units have dogs living in them!

Connie gives really good advice. What I did that worked like a charm was put together a binder of photos of my dogs, copies of some of their titles, a letter from my vet, previous neighbors, and previous landlords. Was never denied a place to live and that was with 3 Australian Cattle Dogs

Mike, Tell them that your dog is an Alsation. Its the same as a GSD but a different name due to region. I'll bet they never heard of an Alsation and it wont be on their list. Of course, a well behaved Alsation is even better.

Hi Mike. Thankfully I've been a home owner for several years, but during rental periods, I was successful in negotiating with private landlords. I never let the "no pet" thing in the newspaper stop me from making a call to a PRIVATE landlord.
I did the same things others have suggested, and I was always able to find a place to rent:
1) Offer a non-refundable pet deposit.
2) Offer references related to the dogs. (vets to prove current vaccinations and general care, friends or trainers who can comment positively about their experience with the dogs).
3) Offer the land lord an opportunity to meet the dogs.
4) Offer proof of liability insurance which covers the dogs in case of a stupid lawsuit.
In my experience it takes a LOT more time and effort to find a place when you have dogs of any kind. But it's so worth it!!
And kudos to the dog camper!!! We camp regularly with our dogs just for fun and to go to dog events. It's awesome!!!

Oops - one other suggestion regarding the "breed" of your dog. Of course you need to be careful as it pertains to laws in your state. BUT - I successfully rented several homes with a chow/shepherd mixed breed in my care. When asked by prospective landlords "what breed is your dog" I just said "mixed breed, I'm not sure." Of course there were no papers one way or the other on that. I wouldn't want to end up in court debating the breeds of dogs I have, but I have never had an insurance agent or land lord ask me for papers either.
Best wishes,
Beth
