Is anybody reading this book? I'm just really getting into it and it has made me realize just what a tease his TV show is. The book focuses more on relating to your dog than training it. I would love to discuss in detail some of his theories as they relate to your experiences in training your dogs.

Finished it, loved it, read it again last week, still loved it. It's very very basic, I think, but the people I work with are 99% very very basic, and a refresher like this on dog psychology is good for me. (And if *they* read it, they wouldn't need me!
Anyway, I enjoyed it enormously.
I think that many people who post regularly to this type of site are quite a bit beyond Cesar's basic behaviorist information, but I also think that reading a book like this is great for anyone who has failed a bit with pack leadership in the past or maybe is acquiring their first dog or trying to undo errors.
Well-done, IMHO. And even people who know the advice he's offering might still find it a good read.

I enjoyed hearing about his own life actually, even though I know others didn't really. Certainly gives an interesting angle on the illegal immigration thing, eh? I don't remember his exact words, but I think I heard a quote from him that was something like "Only in America can someone coming from a different country knowing no English have their own television show 14 years later."
Anyways, some of the topics were actually very helpful that I rarely hear covered in other training/behavior books, such as what to do when you and your family are moving.

You are 100% right, and I had overlooked that point.
P.S. I liked the bigraphical part, too, even though he's been featured in a lot of print media here in CA and his backstory is familiar...... I *really* enjoyed the book. Twice!

Read the book and loved it. It filled in some blank areas for me and has made things much easier. Something so simple as the correction he gives with the stiff fingers mimicing a bite. It works and the dogs just get it, they understand that the behaviour is not ok. No violence, no yelling, no repeating NO! NO! or any other command.
I've posted it on other threads but I read Cesars book, The other end of the leash, latchkey dogs, bought 2 different DVD's from ED and listened to most if not all of the pod casts in addition to reading articles on this web site. All of these materials have helped and were informative. I only wish I had access to them 20 years ago. Oh yea, one other thing that has been extreamly helpful, you folks on this board. Great info and some humor.

Have you watched Ed Frawley's updated Basic Ob DVD?
It's a *lot* more than obedience, and, unlike the other obedience videos I have, it includes early markers for eye contact.

Reading The Latchkey Dog by Jodi Andersen was what got me into training and behavior a couple years ago. I also finally finished up The Other End of the Leash by Patricia McConnell and the primate versus canine comparisons are very helpful to be aware of as well.

i also loved this book and read it in just a few sittings. it filled in a few gaps in my awareness, and i put some of the ideas into practice and they worked immediately!
walking like cleopatra, using the "tsst!" with the finger bite, and now i can walk him off leash in unpopulated areas without worrying about him running off. i had been planning on getting an e-collar, but now i don't think i will need it.
we've been doing the cesar-style "walk" in the early mornings in a deserted area of public lands for about a month. this week for the first time i gave him permission to wander out ahead of me as we walked. when i called him back, his recall was instantaneous, eager, and perfect.
the only complaint i have is that i can't daydream and zone out while walking, which is an important part of my creative process for work. but as time goes on, i don't have to be quite as vigilant. i think for a month's work, after four years of him being incorrigible on walks, of having to have him on a leash, that this is quite an accomplishment.
sometimes i revert to prong collar corrections and "no!" or "uh-uh" and he is not even remotely as responsive as with the finger bite and the "tsst!" i have no idea why! at this point i can just say "tsst!" in any situation and he falls right into line. i think he is much happier and more confident, so clearly my leadership persona needed some tweaking, and cesar had the words that got through to me.
