Hi all, just sent a "companion" puppy to Plymouth, Mass. They would like to find a "respect-based" obedience trainer for their 5 month old Giant Schnauzer. They had a lot of problems with their previous dog and wish to avoid a repeat of that.
If you have any recommendations, around Plymouth, even as far as Boston, we would be greatful!
Thanks very much!
Tammy.
Hi Tammy,
I may have a reccomendation for you. It is a GSD breeder that has been training working dogs for over 25 years and specializes in "problem" dogs. I reccomend her because I have purchased 2 working line GSD's from her and currently attend training classes. She made a miracle out of my female who was what you would call a dominant/aggressive terror at only 5 months! My female is now a love that gets along great with my children and new male pup. The facility is approx. 40 mins North of Boston, and her Saturday class is attended by people from all over MA, NH, and Maine. I'm not sure of your definition of "respect-based" training, but she follows the same philosophy as Ed, and this is why I purchased and train my dogs with her. If this is what your client is looking for, I can let you know the web address for detailed information.
I did my basic to intermediate obedience training at a place called Canine College in Holbrook, MA. They specialize in schutzhund and obedience, and do all breeds and a lot of pets. The head trainer there has Rotties and GSDs and their dogs are very impressive. They know what they're doing. http://www.caninecollege.net/
Plymouth to Holbrook is probably about a 45 minute to an hour drive.
I have also heard good things from others about Canine Mastery in Seekonk, MA, but cannot vouch for it personally. There is also a "practice" class in Quincy, MA for honing skills but I do not believe they cater to those learning the basics -- it's more of a "let's all get together and practice" type deal.
For more information, PM me. I live about a half an hour from Plymouth and I or my very close training friends know most of the training spots in the area.
