I have a 6 1/2 month old puppy who is very promsing in all aspects but having only one testicle descending. I've heard there were ppl used some homeopathic method helped him getting that down. Is that possible?
I've never heard of a homeopathic remedy for this,
but there have been reports of vets using human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) and gonadatrophin releasing hormone (GnRH) to cause testicles retained in tissue to descend into the scrotum, but I understand it's usually done around three months of age or so, and even then the success rate is low. Are you planning on studing the pup?
I searched online. It suggested that it would pass on to the offsprings. So I don't think I would stud him. But if it's not for this, I think I really would, coz he has excellent drive, calm grip, balanced personality... everything. I expected him to be a sport dog. I'm worried if this condition might affect his health, working ability, testosterone level or personality...
It shouldn't affect his temperament or growth at all.
It is pretty safe to say the problem is genetic, so there is a very good reason NOT to breed your dog. . .not that any bitch owner in his right mind would breed to a dog with only one nut.
I have a 10 month old GSD - I got him when he was 3 mos. old - neither testicle had dropped yet, however if you pushed up you could slightly feel them. I talked to several vets and many breeders of different dogs - none of them were concerned. They all said basically the same thing - it could be up to year for them to drop - if they don't - I could wait up to 18 months before neutering him - with this causing no effects on any of your concerns.
At 8 mos - 1 dropped --- the other dropped the other day ------- be patient.
That condition is called Cryptorchidism in which only one or no testicles descend. It is heritable, so the dog should be neutered, and is at higher risk for testicular cancer if not taken care of. Besides that, a dog with this condition is very unlikely to even produce at all. My very first dog had the same problem, only one testicle descended.
What happens is when the testis drop, the opening at which they dropped(called the inguinal ring)now begins to close around 6 months of age, not allowing anything else to pass through. So it's safe to say if they haven't dropped by now, they're not going to.
I wouldn't attempt to breed these dogs, get them taken care of.
