Does anyone use the puppy aptitude test? Can someone interpret the results of my puppy?
Puppy Aptitude test
Please help interpret...
Today I gave Aramis his puppy aptitude test and as I have no real experience
I tried to be as acurate in my scoreing as possible. I performed the test in
my living room in an area approx 10'x14'(approximate is not extremely
accurate but it's a pretty open area)
1. Social attraction: 3
2. Following: 3 He followed readily but was slightly distracted
3. Restraint: 5 at about 25 secs he started getting wrestless (I held him
above the floor about 12")
4. Social Dominance: 4 While I was petting him he remained in position for a
few seconds then tried to bite at my ankle.
5. Elevation Dominance: 3 he struggled the last 3-5 secs
6. Retreiving: 3
7. Touch Sensitivity: 2
8. Sight Sensitivity: 1
9. Structure: Good (I am no expert but he appears to be well built)
I can offer no interpretation. Not only have I not seen this particular aptitude test, but I have not read the book and the test in context. Someone on this board told me to check into this dog training for dummies book though.
Is there an interpretation analysis in the book?
Are you concerned about your puppy's aptitude? I think tests like these are helpful in a clinical trial/setting, however, personally, I believe if you have a healthy dog who is open to and is progressing to your satisfaction with training methods you choose, who cares?
The web address listed below has an interpretation of the scores that you gave to your puppy. The interpretation is at the bottom of the page so make sure you scroll down past the test.
Hope this helps.
How old was the puppy when you did this? Are you a complete stranger to the dog? If the dog is 7 wks old and the pup doesn't know you then the results will be more accurate. Testing them yourselves when they know you, not very accurate.

I have never administered this test. I was simply trying to get Darlene some information that she was looking for. I do not know how acurate or any of the parameters concerning this test. I am also not promoting or advocating its use. Like I said I was just trying to help Darlene.
Sorry if it came out that way, question was to Darlene where she said she was doing the test. It all depends on the age when it's done and REALLY needs to be done by a stranger to the dog to be accurate.
You may also try this test. PAWS Working dog evaluation I have used it and found it to be a good indicator. Keep in mind that theese test are just that an indication of potential. Be careful not to project your expectation onto the dog and always train as though you have a Top Dog.
When I got my now 11 month old puppy last fall, I had the evaluator do a mixture of both the PAWS and the Volhard test. However, the form I used was basically the Volhard one. I transcribed and saved all the information that the evaluator jotted down.
A previous poster is correct - the test is much more effective if given by an outside person and the optimum time seems around the 7-8 week range (at least that is what I heard). So far the Volhard evaluation seems right on par with what I am seeing with my puppy. When he was tested, he had a strong toy drive but during the toy retrieve test he grabbed it and trotted off with it. He is still can be an independant little *&%^ to this day :-p
If interested, feel free to PM me and I can email you copies of my evaluation forms.
