Hey guys...I gotta question.
I just picked up a really nice 10 month old bitch pup. The seller gave her ivermec orally just before we left his place to guard against heartworm and internal parasites.
Two questions then...
1. Is ivermec effective? (possibly answered by my next question, but I am unsure)
2. The day after I picked her up, I noticed very small (app. the diameter of sewing thread and about 1-2 inches long) white worms wiggling (yes wiggling...they were very much alive) in her stool. To me they appear too small to be roundorms (possibly juvenile??) Does anyone have any idea what these worms are? And is there something more effective than what I get at the vet (I believe it is Strongid) in eliminating them?
Thanks for you help <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Please take your dog to the vet with a stool sample for professional evaluation. I know worms can be picked up easily, but I find it disturbing that your pup is 10 months old and has worms. If the breeder was administering Ivermec regularly, it is unusual for her to have worms.
Spend the extra money for a blood test for heartworms too. Good Luck with your new pup!
I do plan on taking her to the vet for a full eval - fecal test, heartworm, general health, etc. but I do not know when I can get in. With my work schedule and the holiday I won't be able to get in until next Monday so I was looking for idea in the mean time as I do not believe it is anything I have ever seen before. It is not tapeworms and I have seen no evidence thus far of tapes, but I am watching her closely.
Also, please tell me why it disturbs you that a 10 month old dog has worms? Does this say something about her immune system? Or just lack of vigilance on her previous owner's part? Hopefully the latter as I really like this dog's temperament and she has a really nice pedigree to go along with it and I was hoping to use her for breeding down the road if all works out with her training.
Thanks for your replies thus far.

Glad you have a pup you really like....may have hook worms. Probably a good worming with panacur will take care of the problem. I'm sure she will be fine for whatever you wish to do with her in the future. Unfortunately, our furry friends tend to get parasites on occassion, in spite of our best efforts!
I have found that the HeartGuard that is suppose to control other worms other then Heartworms, does not. I have had dogs get hookworms, and roundworms while on it, and not get heartworms; so this is not anything (by itself) to get worried about. Have the stool checked and treated for whatever worms you may have.
I would tell the vet your findings and furnish them with a stool sample and make sure he/she gives you a broad spectrum wormer. Some of the more unusual parasites (threadworm, lungworm etc,) sometimes need a longer dosage to kill 'em off like a 5 day dosage instead of 3 with fenbendazole(Panacur/Safeguard).
