Depends on the dog; and the trainers capabilities . Age and mental maturity of dogs arent directly porportional ie a 12 month old dog isnt always more mentally mature than an 8 month old dog. I would have a plan and deceide what you are using the e collar for and have the dog proofed on the long line before I start, but that is just me. I have never needed a prong yet; all my dogs are soooo soft a good " pop " on a flat collar is usually enough
What is a flat collar. Please do not use an E-collar on a dog. You`re going to screw him up. WHAT IS A FLAT COLLAR? Man that poor dog. And just so you know, do NOT use the E-collar to teach a behavior.
That's kind of a harsh statement. Some people may be very good with dogs without knowing every technical term. Personally, I've seen flat collars normally called buckle collars. Don't fault someone for wanting to clarify to avoid confusion.
mARK - your staement on not using a rempte collar is not correct. In fact it reflects a coomplete lack of understanding of training. I suggest you withhold your comments from this thread.
As for the intial quesgtion on when to use a remote collar - this is not an age issue. It's a temperament and rive issue.
By making the statement you made you reflect your lack of expericne in training
