Hi to all... i searched around the forum for something similar but i might not have used a good enough keyword to find my answer...
i have a 6 month old GSD that has 2 spots on his tongue... they seem to be "blackish" in color one is about a half inch big the other is just a small dot about the size of a pea or two... are these spots normal? i have had the pup since he was 8wks old and neither the mom or the dad have spots on there tongue and he didnt have them either up until maybe 4-5 weeks ago... i thought that he might have chewed on a marker but i never found a chewed marker or evidence of it but the mark looks very similar to when a kid puts a marker in its mouth without the lid... thanks for any input on this.
My 6 month old GSD has a black spot on his tongue. His mother does too. I think it's normal. If you do a google search on "gsd black spot tongue" you'll find other references to it.
My female has two large black spots on her tongue. When she was a pup I only saw two tiny spots, but since she has grown (she is one year old now) they are huge; especially when she is real tired and panting heavy! <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
With the black spots on the tongue thing I used to hear people say the dog has it because it's a mix breed, this is totally a myth. I think people came up with this because chows have dark tongues so people assumed the dog was mixed with chow.
My older dog has them and they were small when she was little, but now they are a bit bigger (I guess because her tongue grew). If it was an older dog I would be worried if the spots showed up all of a sudden because it may be cancer, but because your dog is so young I would think it was normal. Have fun with your pup : )
