I just had a pup daignosed with pano. The vet diagnosed it and was quick to toss about the Rimadyl pills like they were candy. Of course he forgot to tell me about the side effects (my fault for not immediately asking).
I came home and read Ed's article on pane and at the bottom of the article in bold letters don't give Rimadyl. After doing some research, the only thing I could find out, and it was very vague, is that it causes death. What kind of side effects does this drug have? Does buffered aspirin have the same effects on pano as Rimadyl? Is the recovery time longer with aspirin?
My young dog has had pano off and on (has it again now too) and I treat with ascriptin as needed.
Rimadyl isn't going to make it go away any faster, it is merely inflammation that goes away with growth. My vet was more than happy to offer the candy as well, but I declined. Then he said to use ascriptin (asprin and malox, can be found in most pharmacies in the pain section... bought mine at wal-mart)
Hope this helps. Duration and severity seems to be an individual thing. My first dog had two seperate bouts with pano about 4 months apart. Poor Blitz seems to have it every third week! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />
Thanks Deanna. You would think that vets would have some duty to the patient and their owners to tell them about the adverse effects of a medication. But that would only make sense, wouldn't it?
When your dogs had pano, what did you do to limit their movement? I have had him in a porta-kennel for the last week and a half, and I know he is going stir crazy in there.
Vets are no different from human MDs - they rarely spontaneously offer all the possible side effects or risks unless you ask. I'm sure vets still consider Rimadyl safe for short term use. I've heard of exceptional results from Piroxicam (a prescription anti-inflammatory) for relieving symptoms of pano, much better than just aspirin, but that's strictly anecdotal.
