Currently we live in an area with no snow and mild weather. My dogs are outside half the day and have a 40 X 30 dog run with a covered balcony overhead with two doghouses (which they never use).
In a weeks time we are moving to a colder climate and I need to build a new dog run in the fenced yard. I am concerned because this new yard has no balcony and no trees (so no shade). I am going to get a large double dog house built similar to the "Leerburg" doghouses and add a awning over the top for shade. I may also add concrete block on the ground to avoid mud in the winter.
Does anyone have ideas how to build some kind of extra structure over the run to supply more shade/shelter than what a doghouse awning would offer????
I currently have three 10'X 10' kennels inside a 30' X 70'
fenced area. I use the rest of the yard that is also fenced as a run/training area. I have just planted vines to cover the fence between the two yards. Each kennel has a tarp type roof but will be replaced by a corigated fiberglass roof (with incline) before the snow flys. I use cow mats for flooring in the kennels and pressure wash, spray down with kenlan, pressure wash again and then mop with bleach water every other day. I will likely be putting down pea gravel in the kennel area next spring. Besides their normal training and walks I give each dog a couple hours in the large area each day.
You could easily do pea gravel and cover part of your run with corigated fiberglass. All you have to do is dig post holes then use different sizes of 4"X4"'s to get an incline so the water runs off, have the pea gravel delivered and spread then put the roof on.
