Hi all... a little help (or a lot...) would be appreciated!
We are training a 5 year old male who "all of a sudden" won't hold his down during gunfire!
He has his VPG1, NO PROBLEM... now we're working on his VPG2, his heeling during gun fire is fine, and you can even fire the gun over his head during sleeve work, he doesn't even flinch... but on the DOWN... it's all downhill from there...
Tammy,
I'd go with playing a recording of gunfire at home on low volume until the dog ignored it completely, then repeat the step at a higher volume. And keep repeating the steps at an ever increasing volume over a long time period......
On the field I'd be having gun shots done at a far distance away ( at least 75 meters min. ) and reward the dog for calm behavior during it - then repeat the steps bringing the gun fire closer and closer over the course of the month that you have left for training.
Make any progress slow but steady and don't rush it.
In your estimation is this an unintended conditioned response or anxiety? If he is fine in all the other circumstances you may want to really look at his response.
Like Will said, associate a neutral attitude with the gunfire. Do you have the ability to take the dog out and fire a .22 at some distance repeatedly while the handler plays with the dog? You can step up the caliber and shorten the distance as the dog is more comfortable.
