I have one question about spaying an older dog. My 6 yo gsd was spayed yesterday and she just came home today, she is doing very well and is resting a lot. I was wondering do female dogs get that wide look after being spayed, I've seen a lot of dogs get wider looking at younger ages that I always thought was related to being spayed at a young age. Is it from being spayed (causing metabolism changes) or being overfed? Thanks in advance.
if by wide you mean fat/overweight, then I don't think it matters if the dog is spayed or not. It is up to the owners to feed and exercise it approprietly to make sure the dog does not become overweight. Granted, I heard that spayed dogs put on weight easier, but regardless, I think the blame still falls on the owners.
I had my Border Collie spayed 8 months ago. She was also 6 at the time. I know some dogs metabolisims change, but I haven't noticed any difference in her metabolisim, weight, or looks.
She is still slim, active, and people still ask she is a young dog (you mean she 7 years old? I thought she was only a year or two!).
I agree - the weight is caused by overfeeding, not spaying!
I have a rescue dog that was not spayed when I got her. She is approximately 2 to 3 years old, but we can never be sure on her age. I had her spayed in April and she has not gained any weight since then. In fact, I now have a foster dog and she plays and romps with him, so she is more toned now than she was.
If you continue to exercise the dog (after the stitches come out of course) she will not gain weight.
Thanks for the answers everyone
I don't like when dogs have that refrigerator boxy shape. My girl has a well defined waist and is pretty slim at 62 lbs, I just want her to stay that way. I'll be sure to monitor her weight just in case her metabolism changes much from the surgery. She loves going out for walks and jumping up on small walls near my house (under a elevated highway), so for the next 2 weeks her limited activity will be hard for her, but she will still get her regular walks without the jumping . Thanks again.
