Hi all. I would like to know if anyone knows how to eliminate or at least temper the smell of urine in the waste area where we take the dog to do it's business. We have wood chips laid down right now and we are going to keep the chips. Thanks in advance.
Either let the dog pee in grass, my yard doesn't smell like pee Or maybe try a pet-carpet cleaner type spray? I don't know how effective it would be, but it does a pretty good job of neutralizing odors:
Might want to spray down "Nature's Miracle" and stuff like that (I don't know if we are talking the same thing, Mike). An enzymatic cleaner. You'd have to reapply often but my guess is--just my opinion--is that you may get yourself in trouble if you introduce something that the dog may detect and avoid. I have never used Nature's Miracle like that but it works on everything else...including my smelly shoes and feet.
Shovel out the chips once a week and bring in new ones?
I worked at a kennel that used woodchips. It got DISGUSTING after any amount of rain. Can't sterilize the stuff either, they're like hard sponges. Best to find something else!

Yes, this is so true. A neighbor ended up dumping the chips he had put down in the dogs' "bathroom" area. It seemed like a good idea at the time........
But the smell is permanent, and it's invigorated with every new wetting and sun-warming. Blech.
Now he has grass there. An out-of-the-way area is nice for people who have beautiful lawns (counts me out).
I would try using agricultural lime. You can get it at most feed stores. I use it in my horse stalls with wood shaving. It seems to get rid of the horse urine smell. I would think it would do the same for doggie pee.
