I wouldn't worm any dog unless a fecal exam indicated that the dog actually HAD worms.
I don't believe in using wormer (or any medication) on a specific schedule just because a vet tells me to .... there needs to be an actual parasite load on the animal for me to give them chemicals.
You could test as often as you want, but I check my adult dogs about every 3 months.
Puppies should be checked more frequently.
Raw fed healthy dogs actually are more resistant to worms and parasites than conventially fed dogs...
there is a risk of parasites. if you read ian billinghurst's "give a dog a bone" he covers this quite thoroughly. the solution is to freeze all rmbs and raw meat at 0 degrees F or -20 C for ten days before feeding. this is especially important if you are feeding wild game. this will kill the parasite eggs. and never feed any part of the gi tract of a wild animal as this is where parasites live at a stage that is exceedingly dangerous.
we do get parasites from our dogs, and tapeworm is not something to flirt with. freezing is the answer.
as for worming, i use garlic oil capsules to discourage them, and also a chinese herbal preparation called "phellostatin." and i take them myself, too!
don't think that the parasite risk is lower if you feed kibble. pets get parasites and so do we. if you've ever had rare meat or sushi, you have them for certain!
Hmm, I do freeze my RMBs..I'm getting the chicken necks and meat on a per week basis; so they are frozen for 5-7 days... I don't feed wild game just because I don't have it readily available.
As for the phellostatin, where can I get that? I was in France 2 weeks ago and "well done" isn't part of any restaurant's dictionary.

I'm glad this thread came up. I never thought about this kind of regular testing.
This would be just dropping off a sample every few months, right?
