My pup has recently begun marking his territory. He goes from bush to bush, car wheels, you name it he marked it... Should I be correcting him, without praise afterwards , since this isn't an obedience correction? Any input is welcome ..
IMHO, don't wait until AFTER he does it, just have the pup relieve himself in your own yard (use the relief command protocol) and then keep him on a short leash during your walks so he can't mark all over everyone else's property -- Problem solved <:-)
Well. before going on our walk he does his business on command (very nicely as a matter of fact). But the past 3 days while on our walk he would either raise his leg suddenly and mark or even would squat (he's still in between them )...
Even if I do have a short leash, he might still mark.. My question is should I correct him when I see him do it?
I'll be keeping him on the prong or e-collar. He's been conditioned to both collars since he was 3 1/2 months.. I began corrections at 7 1/2 months.. He's too hard of a dog to mind a normal leather collar correction.
Yeah.. I do... I also have the Dominant Dog Dvd and have laid out the groundwork very well. I don't, however, recall the Marking issue addressed in that DVD.
It might be in the housebreaking part of "Your Puppy 8 Weeks to 8 Months" (which is still very much worth getting, even though your pup's maturing now) and there are a few remarks about it in Basic Obedience, and Dominant & Aggressive Dogs too, IIRC...
Anyway, if you startle your dog (with a NO or !aaan-aaan! marker) the very instant he goes to pee, he'll probably stop before he actually begins, especially if combined with a collar correction -- then give the Heel or Fuss command & pick up the pace of your walking "with authority" so he's reminded that the pack leader says when & where a follower relieves itself <:-)
At 8.5 months, he's no longer a baby puppy, so just as long as he gets a good chance to do his business at home before the walk, it isn't asking too much of him to save it for your own yard (since this is territorial marking & not the need to empty a full bladder).
I've got the 8 to 8 dvd too. I remember trying to startle him (when he was still 3 months and was squatting in his crate) I fired the gun in doors, he didn't even flinch, Just looked me in the eye and went right on..
