I am looking for a female or male 1-2yrs to be trained and certified as per the ADA definition of Medical Service Dog: Seizure Response. While training a GSD that washed-out for health reason I have previously extablished professional reference of the State of Georgia DOT, and several businesses when I resided in Augusta GA. I am well aware, while not knowing everything, that in these definitions it clearly states the dog has the right to bite in defense of itself/handler. I pay close attention to this, how much bite would I need, after sharing my past and present experiences. A disabled person has needs that are unique to themselves and I have the interest to "let my good behavior represent me as a GSD Service Dog Handler". I am hopeful to develop (business) friends here, that we may work together making the connection of other disabled people and GSD that may need a job. I am new to this forum, have had disasterous experiences elsewhere, possibly things will not be too bad here?
Bitework: While some of us with independantly-trained service dogs do enjoy SchH, the dog for this job may not be the same spitfire dynamo electrifying the training club field. The dog for this job would have very balanced drives, clear-headed, ideal pack drive, and bombproof nerves. You're I'm sure aware the ADA waives public access rights should a service dog show aggression when out working in public. Best bet if you want to do bitework also, is to select a super-stable dog with great on-off switch, again, balanced drives rather than extreme.
To find your prospect: Many working dog breeders keep back a few pups from litters to see how they'll turn out. Be upfront about your goal, and patient with the breeder, who may never have placed a dog in this job before. Bring your trainer to help evaluate the young dogs. By 7 months, you'll be better able to evaluate a dog for this work than an 8 wk old puppy.
I'm very lucky: My service dog trainer also trains police patrol and detection K9s.(yes, really) Find a trainer who understands the drives in the lines you're looking for.
Take your time, this is your working partner for the next 10+ years. Enjoy your search, you'll meet the best people along the way!
