Hi, my name is Des. I have a boardercollie/king sheperd mix and he does not like other dogs.... Hes alright with small dogs but when it comes to big dogs he'll go after them tail up and hackles up... He's gotten alot better over the last year instead of going to bite the dogs right away he go and sniff them first (giving me time to go get him).... I've been socilising him at the beach and he does good out of his yard... But in our yard when hes tied up he'll launch himself and the dog and sometimes his collar will break.... he jumps fences..... I love him very much and have asserted myself as Alpha but it doesnt help very much..... what can I do?

Can he not be tied in the yard?
We do but he becomes even more agressive and like I said we havnt been able to find a collar he cant break or slip out of
Easy problem to fix - invest in better fences and stronger collars and don't allow your dog to socialize with other dogs.
This is a management problem, not a training issue.
Problem solved.
will, don't you think the dog should receive a hard, well-timed correction for this behavior?
i wouldn't tie him in the yard. it does increase aggression.
Where should I tie him then? He's loves being outdoors but we live on a military base with not much of an area where I would be able to tie him out.... and yeah Im trying to convinve my parents to get a pronged collar to help with his behaviour issues.... they dont seem to think he has one....
i have absolutely NO experience w/military bases and their housing and restrictions. but i can say that tieing him out ON a prong collar isn't feasible, or smart. the collar would most likely come apart, not teaching him a THING except he can escape from another collar.
i wonder if an ecollar might be the way to go in this situation? people with a LOT more knowledge than i have will hopefully respond and help you out a LOT more than i just did

desiree.... you don't tie a dog out at all. it creates behavioral problems like the one you are writing about. see if your parents will get you a fenced run for him. you can buy them at feed stores. maybe petsmart has them, too.
yeah Ill try the run idea and see if my parents will go for it,but for now we still have to tie him out until we can buy or build one... for now should I bve correcting him for his behaviour while tied ouy? if yes, how?
