Hi, wanted your views please: I have gsd and Retriever both 1 year girls, we want to bring a yorkie pup into the familly. preference is for girl, what are your views regards compatibility? whether a boy or girl would be better... i thought the mother instinct would help with my two girls - any experience would be very helpful. Obviously dont want my dogs to think it's early dinner or anything!! - thanks
If you bring a third dog in I would bring in a male since you already have 2 females. But why a Yorkie? It may work out fine, but if either of your larger dogs has any prey drive it could also turn out to be a disaster unless you are able to completely separate the small dog from the larger at all times interactions could not be closely supervised. Don't forget that Yorkies, despite their size, are terriers and terriers do have a tendency to want to dominate even if the other dogs are 10 times their size and terriers also generally won't back down.
thanks for your reply - makes sense, it is the lady of the house that yearns for a yorkie!
Possibly suggest a breed or type that doesn't tend to be quite so dominating such as a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, English Toy Spaniel, or, if she wants the long hair, even a Maltese.
