It's very sad that two kids had to lose a mother but it was her own fault and no one can say she had not had previous warnings. It sounds like another case of get a large "scary-looking" macho breed for "protection" without learning anything about the breed and without doing any training.
Watching the videos and reading the other articles, this family also have TWO MORE Presas that have gotten loose in the past, acting aggressive towards the neighbors. Another case of an idiot owner who has no business owning a Maltese, let alone a large, serious breed like the Presa. Now the kids get to grow up without a mom, probably hating dogs forever, and the other Presas will likely be put down and the breed will get one step closer to a ban.
"akin to a pit bull"
Just what we need; let's liken every dog involved in an attack to a pit bull. Lord knows we don't have enough stories actually involving them (or at least dogs being called pit bulls), so we need to throw those two magic words into this story...about Presas, or rather, about irresponsibility.
We have a very responsible Presa breeder in our club and all her dogs are fantastic.
Would it be cold hearted to say another idioit owner has helped ruin another good breed?

.............Not cold hearted at all. Seems like it's in a moron's job description to take a good breed and turn it sour.
Here's an apt quote from an article steering the blame for problem pit bulls where it belongs (problem owners):
<< And the Presa Canario ........... seems to be the new dog of choice for those seeking a little extra manhood from their canine companion. >>
people do liken it to pitbulls, but for sure anything the press can get hold of to sensationalise is game for them!
an extract on the breed:
"As a guardian breed with man-stopping ability there is no dog that is more effective than the Canary Dog. It remains and incredibly powerful and fearless animal, it is known for its great devotion to its human family, and it is known to accept children in the home. This is a dog that will stay by its master's side at all times and is never known to stray. This dog is protective by nature and will not hesitate to attack anyone whom it perceives as a threat to its family or home. Such an attack could only be a hopeless situation for any man involved."

sad day for the lady, her familly and large dog breeds everywhere
I lived in FL for three years and this doesn't surprise me one bit. People can say, its not just FL, or don't be stereotyping, but the fact of the matter is there are many irresponsible dog owners in FL due to the culture mix and those who choose to try and adopt their laws from there home origin over here.
