I brought Dexter (GSD, born on 24th June, 2006) home just this morning and it is unbelievably smart. He can already follow us while we're walking without a leash. Something even more amazing, he can climb the stairs!
The canine trainer told us that our puppy can start training right away. But someother people said we have to waiting until puppy is 6 months old. And the seller wants us to send him to school right after he finishes his first three shots which would be when he's 4 months old.
I am really new to dogs and I really wanna send him to school. I want professional people to teach me how to treat a puppy from the very beginning.
I used to have a husky, and I failed to train him into a really good dog. So I dont want to screwed up again this time.
So I need some advice when should I send him to school? Thanks everybody.
get ed's videos: your puppy 8 weeks to 8 months, and get "basic dog obedience" and stay away from the puppy training classes. there are a lot of out of control dogs at those classes and your pup could get bit and be traumatized.
watch those two videos first at least, and you'll be in a better position to decide what to do.
I got my Basic Obedience DVD last week and by the results so far am very confident to say that this will work if you put in the time and patience. Plus you'll build a bond with your pup that will last a lifetime.
A third for the videos. Cheaper than classes. We have had good luck in the past 2 months using the videos (well we have used the videos for the past 5 weeks).

Okay, seems that everybody's just watching the movie and then train puppy himself. I'll go check those vedios out and get started!!! Thanks everyone.

The Basic Ob video, for example, is about 4 hours long. And parts of it, especially Disk 2, you might want to watch more than once. http://www.leerburg.com/302.htm
I ask clients who are first-time dog owners and whose dogs are learning manners from me to get that video and watch it for their "homework."
I like that one a lot because it covers so much more than Basic Ob. The first part covers just about the whole new-dog protocol, like a set of instructions for a new acquisition!

May I add too that even if you have plans that include professional training later on, you will have so much more expertise and background to draw on in choosing a club or a trainer.
I know from friends in our training club that teaching a pup and seeing him "get it," seeing his joy in learning and succeeding, is just a great experience. I'm generally handling green or badly-trained adults, but I can still say that there's nothing quite like being that profound influence.
Yah connie, Just about few minutes ago, I ordered the two vedio that were mentioned. But still Im gonna book an appointment with our K9 local training club, to get some great experience that you said.

Cool! Actually, what I meant was that watching the videos would equip you to choose a trainer or club better. But yeah, check 'em out!
