On Monday, I took Sadie to the vet. He gave her a physical, updated her vaccinations, and kept her most of the day to observe her behavior.
She was doing the constant circles in the kennel. He gave her 50 mg of Ace so that she could get some rest for the day. He also researched a couple of medications and decided that we would put her on Anipryl to see if there would be any improvement. Anipryl is a fairly new drug being used to control dimentia in dogs. He diagnosed her with Obsessive Cognitive Disorder. It may take a couple of weeks for the drug to kick in. There are no guarantees that it will even work for her.
In the evening, I take her out into the big part of the yard and we just play in the grass. Last night she was doing the constant circling, without stopping. I would call her over to me, get her to sit and less than a minute later she was on the go again. After about 30 minutes, when she came to me, I got her to sit and then literally shoved her into a down. She just went into a heap, she was so exhausted. I kept her down for about 10 minutes and just petted, massaged and talked to her.
The look in her eyes was awful. It was like she was just pleading with me to make it stop. I am going to talk to the vet again today. He said we may have to put her on a maintenance dose of Ace until we see if the Anipryl is going to work. We also plan to do a blood panel. He is thinking, possibly, a thyroid dysfunction may be causing the hyperactivity.
One step at a time. Sadie is a beautiful, gentle dog. She deserves much better than this. We will find the answer (I hope!)
