My Cairn terrier is 10 and half months old and is bleeding from the gential area. Ive been told that she is in heat but i am not sure if she is as this person is no expert.
Its not much blood and its not all the time.
Whats going on with my dog? is she in heat? if so how long does this go on for? how many times a year?
Please take your Cairn bitch into the vet's office & make an appointment to have her spayed -- while you're there, he can confirm whether she's in heat now...
Meanwhile, please be sure to keep her completely away from all intact male dogs for 3 weeks, so the poor thing doesn't get bred accidently!
Ive heard that you should let your bitch have at least one set of pups before she is nutured. Is this true and if so what are the benifits?
Is she young to be nutured
IMO, you read all you can about breeding, and have answers before attempting to breed any dog. And in my HONEest opinion, leave all the breeding to the pros--NO NEED FOR MORE PUPS ON PETFINDER. Given the nature of your questions, it is apparent you have not done a lot of reading/research.
NEGATIVE on the "breeding once before neutering". Why would you do this?
You can spay your female after 6 months--although from what I know, you will have to wait to do it until she has completed her heat cycle.
It's a Old Wive's Tale that you should let your pup have 1 litter before spaying. No truth to it at all. Just call up your vet to have him look at your girl and get the spay surgery completed. Much easier for you, your dog, and the vet.
Good luck.
BTW, the ONLY dogs (in my opinion) that should be bred are after the owners have enough background and experience to be a 'Responsible Breeder'. And what goes into that is WAY more than I'll ever know!
If you'd like to educate yourself on what a good 'responsible' breeder is, these sites are great:
