My 8 month old GSD has some type of irritation (rash) between the middle two toes on his right paw. The vet prescribed 500 mgs of Cephalexin twice daily for 10 days. She also prescribed antibotic ointment (Animax) to be applied once daily.
Will these meds harm him in any way?
She said that if the irritaton does not clear up, she would suggest a cortisone shot. Would that harm him?
I have no idea how the irritation started. It also does not seem to be causing any problem for him, but he has been licking the area frequently (which gave me the heads-up that there was a problem). It is also tender when I apply the ointment.

Did she prescribe antibiotics because he has an infection? I would absolutely finish the regimen -- not stop giving it.
Was he licking there before, and that's what caused the sore? That's a classic allergy spot...... licking between the toes.
I would definitely want to clear up any infection and hope that's the end of it. If not, this board is crammed with allergy info, and many members are very knowledgeable....... but let's hope it's something else, and the infection will clear up and be done. <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
Any med has the potential to be harmful as well as helpful. If you have started the antibiotic...you need to finish it as it is worse to stop now. However, whether or not your dog actually needed the antibitotic on the first place might be a different question and one that would be very difficult to answer on a BB like this.
THe particular antibiotic you have can be quite 'strong' and upset the stomach. Give with food and I would add some yogurt or aciphilophodus to the food to help restore the intestinal flora.

Thanks, Connie.
So, the meds are relatively harmless for him?
A lot less harmful than an untreated infection.
We overuse antibiotics in this country.
But not treating an infection or stopping the regimen and allowing only the hardiest bacteria to survive -- not a good plan.
I would add some natural (with live cultures) plain yogurt to his food throughout the meds regimen to help replenish the friendly fauna in the gut that are killed by the antibiotic as it kills the infection bugs.
