Hi has anyone got any ideas on what to treat a pup with diarrhoea with out going to the vet
How old is the puppy? How long has he had diarrhea? Why do you not want to go to your vet? Puppies can get dehydrated very quickly and that is a serious problem. Even without knowing more, I don't think this is something you should take lightly. I would take him to your vet as soon as possible. Even if it turns out just to be a tummyache, it is better to be safe than sorry. Just my opinion.
If it's REAL diahrrea (squatting dog and very watery) it's NO food (I mean none) for 24 hours to prevent colitis. YOu want the dogs digestive system to take a rest. Pumpkin (with high fiber) is NOT what you give for this at this time.
Only after 24 hours, do you start up with small meals of VERY bland food, usually WHITE rice (lower fiber) and boiled chicken works well. YOu want a small meal so you don't shock the digestive system and it can continue to heal. After a day or so of the rice/boiled chicken, if every thing is solidifying up you can start mixing in some of their normal food.
REALLY keep an eye on your pup though, if it goes to colitis you need to head to the vet for the expensive shot, antibiotics, and clogging pills needed before they get too ill (and you have HUGE messes to clean up).
I just went through this with my new pup, the day after I got her she started with the runs. I called the breeder, and asked if she knew about it. She said it was probably Giardia, and sent me some pills her dogs were taking for it. It worked for only about 2 days after the treatment. I called my vet to come check the dog, who found that she had hookworm. I did a five day treatment and she has been good for a week now. **Important** hookworms in your dogs stool can be passed through your skin and transmitted to you if you step in it.
Good luck, and don't wait too long to get it checked.
If you always do what you've always done, you'll always have what you've always had.

A perfect example of the importance of a vet check with puppy diarrhea.
