Guys and Gals I need everyones help if possible. My pup has been having loose stool so I fasted then went to rice/chicken. Worked well but then started up again only this time his older sister is having the same problem. I figured ok must be giardia so I took stool samples to the vet from both dogs and they didnt find anything but put my pup on medication for giardia (i was ok with that because I know it is hard to screen for) but they didnt put his sister on anything??? Now the meds are done and he has loose stool again and his sister has the whole time. Im loosing my mid trying to figure out what it could possibly be. I have another vet appointment for Sat. morning and would like any ideas possible to present to them if you guys can think of anything.
Thank you for any help possible!
(sorry for the long post/run on)

That's good that you are checking for parasites tomorrow (which I know you have done, but which can be hard to identify). I know you'll take a fresh fecal with you. (Isn't it fun how intimate we get with poop when we have dogs?)
I would *gradually* trend back to your food, in the absence of worms, etc., slowly replacing 20%, then 30%, of the rice-chicken mixture with the food.
This is good in all diarrhea cases, IMO. Sudden and major diet changes from no fat to 22% fat can be tough on the system, even though dogs need fat. Just like us -- the system wants to make digestive changes slowly.
If the stools get looser at all, stop where you are and stay at the mixture you're on, or back up a bit. This short period of time won't be a nutritional disaster at all, IMO, even though rice and chicken isn't a perfectly balanced full-time diet.

How long have you been feeding this? I feed this sometimes, and it's caused diarrhea in my APBT, but not my GSD. My GSD is used to raw and a variety of different foods, but the APBT was on some horrendously cheap food before, so she had a tough time with the switch. Also, she was on three courses of antibiotics for kennel cough, was spayed, and then vaccinated... (don't get me started...).
You mentioned that your dog was medicated for giardia, so perhaps it's not just the food, but the antibiotics destroying friendly bacteria in the digestive tract. I mixed the food with some pure canned pumpkin and a little plain yogurt to help w/the diarrhea and replenish some bacteria. That way, you can slowly remove these ingredients and it'll be less of a shock than switching from chicken and rice back to the Raw Instinct. Hope that helps some.

If it's bacteria in the intestines they should be able to see that on a fecal sample. I just asked the vet that question yesterday.

Connie, stop and then slowly add more kibble back or just stop and keep it at that rice to kibble mixture?
Thanks alot for all the replies guys/gals!!!!

He has been on it about 1 1/2 months. I am wondering if I should try a different food (because he was on and off with the loose stool originally)but I dont want to screw up his tummy even more. Please keep all the ideas coming.

My one dog was on a certain brand of dog food for a while then all of a sudden had really bad diarrhea. I let her fast and started the bland diet and she was fine again. I was gradually introducing her old food back and immediately she had diarrhea. I'm not sure if she had some type of allergy to the food or if it was a bad batch, but I threw out her old stuff and just repeated the bland diet and bought a different dog food. This happened for about a month and once I made the switch to the new food she was fine.

Chris, I was referring to the destruction of "friendly" bacteria in the stomach due to antibiotics, not bacteria in the intestine causing the problem. Yogurt helps replenish these, but too much can cause dairy-related problems in some dogs. A tablespoon or so is usually good for a big dog.
