Since raw feeding is becoming more popular, has any research been done to prove its benefits? I know what I see in my raw fed dog but it would be nice to hand the facts to the vet/sceptics that think you are going to kill your dog for feeding raw.

Who do you think would fund the research? The commercial dog food companies? I think not! the folks that fund "research" do so to prove they are right to make money..
The research that I have done on my own over the last 12 years feeding my own dogs and Leerburg's breeding dogs and puppies is proof enough for me.

Kibble feeding is new, only for the last 60 years or so. dogs have been eating raw foods for thousands of years... that's what they are designed to eat. I don't need any more proof than that!

Cindy,
I am very well aware about who isn't going to fund it. What I wanted to know does anyone have or has anyone heard of any new info without being blasted for asking.

It was all in humor being sarcastic Lorelei.
Not being blasted
Cindy was right about the commercial dog food companies only wishing to spend money to market their food and the cons to doing raw.
I'll see if I can dig up any recent articles giving the benefits of raw

Bits and pieces of research are coming through. So far, there has been no large-scale study of the type we need to put to rest the stuff we are told by the commercial food companies, but aspects are being studied in vet colleges.
The problem of who will fund this research remains insurmountable. As of a couple of years ago (and I have no reason to believe this has changed), the American Veterinary Medical Association's two major sponsors were Bayer (drug company), and Hill's (pet food company). And the many facets of such a research project are staggering, too: dental, general, musculoskeletal, digestive, brain function, longetivity -- the scope would be huge.
However, snippets such as "Digestibilities of AA were higher in the low-temperature MBM than in the high-temperature MBM" (where AA = amino acids and MBM = meat and bone meal) pop up regularly.
It'll happen.

Thanks Lorenzo.
Lorelei, you can find research to back up just about anything if you look, especially on the internet.
My point was that vets/skeptics arent' going to believe anything except what they have been 'trained' (by dog food companies) to believe in most cases. there are some great and open minded vets out there, but they are in the minority.
I have quit trying to convince people or prove anything about feeding or training or anything else.. People will see the truth when they are ready to. If you ask a question, I may answer it though, and many times folks don't really want to hear my answer. LOL
until then, do the best you can for your own dogs and keep learning! That's what I try to do.

I believe in the adage "don't ask if you don't want to know".I love to learn and will always listen to your answers Cindy and whoever else wishes to expound knowledge my way.. The way I see it there are many more people who have more experience then I do and experience is always the best teacher.

Well, I know you already feed fresh (if I recall correctly), so you're doing great, IMHO!
Sometimes I use different words (like "fresh," or "real" food, or "not factory processed") to kind of nudge people into the realization that what is being discussed here is no weird or bizarre concept; it's just the real food dogs have evolved eating.
Just as humans are discovering every day what a mega-mistake it was to rely on processed food for ourselves, and how much better off we are with food as close to its natural state as possible ---- so are we waking up to the same ideas for our dogs. It makes no sense to believe that they benefit from cans and kibble any more than we benefit from Hamburger Helper and McDonald's.
