Fit him for a top-o-the-line muzzle first (!) then if the e-collar just pisses him off enough so that he re-directs all that aggression onto his handler, at least you'll only end up in the ER instead of the morgue <:-O
We've gotten the muzzle, but I really need some feedback on which Ecollar to get for him (being 200+lbs and all).
He has never redirected his aggression towards any of us. I've dealt with aggressive dogs who have and am very confident he will not. Though we do err on the side of caution, but it is very unlikely. Now with an ecollar it may be a whole new ballgame. We'll see.
I like the Dogtra 1500. You might want to look through the choice of e-collars on this site. There is an explanation about the benfits of the different types of e-collars. Also you should also get Ed's e-collar video
And if you're like me and can't wait.. Just get the Dogtra 1700 NCP.. I've had mine for a month now.. I love the fact that I can see exactly how much stimulation I'm giving. Plus.. you won't be using the e-collar straight away.. you need to go through the "conditioning phase" where you teach your dog to ignore the collar going on and off..
Brian, I'm not sure that the ecollar effectiveness has as much to do with weight as we may think; I know some 200lb men who've, um, experimented with it and they were sorry they did! I think any of the suggested models would be fine.
I also disagree with Barbara's post; I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that he won't redirect on you. Good for you for trying to fix this instead of ignoring it or continuing to bring the dog in public with an "oh well, 200lb Dozer hates other dogs" attitude. YOU know the dog; we don't. We all suggested caution originally-it's up to you now. I know that most un-savvy dog people think I'm absolutely insane for even approaching my dog, let alone grabbing him dog when he's in his Cujo mode, but I know my dog, I know what the object of his aggression is, and I trust that he will not redirect at me. Of course, nothing is for certain and there are no guarantees. But,all I will say is GOOD LUCK.
