It is almost time for my GSD to get his 2yr x-ray for his OFA. I have seen it posted about sedating vs. non- sedating. How do you keep the dog still if not sedated? I would much rather do it this way. Any input is appreciated.
My vet will use anywhere from 2 people to possibly 5-6 if needed to hold the dog in position. Rarely does it take more than 3. If you get beyond 5-6 people then she sedates, otherwise not sedated and she's not been wrong on one of my xrays yet.
If there are any GSD clubs or breeders in your area, I would recommend asking who they recommend for hip X-Rays. The first time we did hip X-rays we went to our regular vet. They would ONLY do this under sedation (which is not our preference now, but at the time we didn't know any better) and they also didn't know how to properly position the dog for a correct X-Ray.
We ended up re-doing that X-Ray for a properly positioned picture with a different vet that a breeder recommended. That vet is experienced and understands the OFA and also SV requirements (including the info that must be on the film), and doesn't sedate unless necessary, as the previous poster described.
