When I see these various ring sports constantly upping the ante as far as distractions during bitework, it gets me wondering if there's such a thing as an unhealthy level of tunnel vision for a bite....in terms of "real world" applications (PSD,PPD).

This isn't rhetorical, I'm genuinly asking.
Don't understand the question! but it is a championship and there has always been lots off distraction some years more some years more subtle but not easier. Don't forget these are the best dogs imaginable
NVBK is a great sport and at the top levels has great dogs.
If you are looking at purely practical work all dogs that come from all sports need a different balance in their work. Though much is about the specific deployment environments and working with real and combative people that is a result of experiences as much as training.
The NVBK is interesting in that it tests the dog through stress placed on the dog by its environment and sees if the dog carries drive to fight through those stresses that are added.
In contrast look at K. Mosts book where a dog doing such things as fighting through a stick is unwanted which as also the way the German Customs worked and trained dogs succseffully for field applications.
There was a widely seen dog deployment by Los Angeles County on a man baricaded in a mini van. The dog had to deal with a variety of very serious and difficult condition to be successfully deployed. This dog was an NVBK dog before being purchased and trained for police work in the US.
