I have four adult GSD's. Yesterday I had a neighbor complain about their barking. During the day all or them have a tritronics BARK LIMITERXS on and they are brought in at 7:00 PM for the night. This is an every day routine, they don't eat until they get their no bark collar put on. They only bark outside during the day, and only if somone is in my back yard, so on a week day if I never go outside they don't bark all day. On week ends there is alot more activity so there is more barking. Since I bring them at 7:00 PM this is not a night barking problem.
One dog in particular will blow through the no bark collar. He will bark, get corrected, yipe in pain, and continue barking. I have tried every setting except 5, which I will try today. If that dosn't work I think I am going to use an e-collar as well and correct the crap out of him when he barks in his kennel. The bottom line is I want no barking when in the kennel and no barking in dog crates. I have handled the crate issue, generally there is no barking in the crates. Barking during a protection training sesson is ok. Barking to warn of a threat when loose in the house or on the street is ok.
I have also changed all the batterys and I think I am going to do that monthly.
What kind of exercise/mental stimulation are your dogs getting? My 2 get barky when they haven't had enough of this...including 2 long walks a day, time to run in the yard with me playing ball etc., and a few obedience sessions. They also go to the park, petstore, dog friendly events, and dog training class.
Agreed; dogs behave MUCH better when they are mentally and physically tired. Also, if the dogs spend all of their time in the yard, they get even more territorial and sometimes even a little neurotic about it. Getting them "off their turf" on a regular basis would probably help a lot. One of the things I do when I have a dog barking at what I feel is an innapropriate time is to distract them: Call them to me and do a little work or play until they've forgotten what they were barking about. Your neighbor sounds a little over-sensitive to me though, in your defense. Especially if your dogs are in by 7:00 PM and all but one are responsive to the bark-collar.
Can't you crate them in the house?? At least this would give the neighbors a break and maybe you could work on the barking and then slowly acclimate them to the outside kennel too. With four dogs the barking is going to be hard to control. Just my thoughts...
