Hi, I own a young Giant Schnauzer female, 1 year old. Upon the recommendation of the holistic vet, she is not spayed. This is the first time I have ever owned a dog that was not spayed or nuetered. She is currently in heat, and my wife is ready to kill me because of the mess. I have purchased both the disposable doggie "diapers", for lack of a better word, and the non-disposable dooggie diapers that you put a disposable maxi pad into. The sizes I bought were for a dog of her weight (70 pounds). Both of these "diapers" keep falling off and needless to say, it gets messy. Anybody have a better system or ideas for containing the mess?
Thanks

My daughter has a 60 lb. lab and she buys little boy underwear (size 2, I think) and then fits an adhesive Kotex panty-liner in it. Works like a charm. Also, she has several pairs of "feminine" doggie blue jeans that are held together with velcro. You can tighten or loosen as needed.
As you think, so shall you be. |

Thanks, I have the blue denim velcro thing, and I have tried child diapers and pull-ps, as well as doggie diapers. Everything stays on fine when she is standing up. When she lays down and gets up throughout the day, the things tends to come loose and fall off. Was wondering if anyone had a better way.
Thanks

duck tape, J/K! Maybe something attached to a harness so it cant slip back and off? I tried the diapers and as you have found they were useless.
P.S. dibbs on the patent if the harness thing works lol <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I wish duct tape was an option. Took in a stray cat once whose tail was duct taped. Needed to be surgically removed. The hair on her tail never did grow back. If anyone has any unique ways of dealing with this, I'd appreciate it. She is a house dog, so kenneling her outside for the duration is not an option. I will come up with something that works, even if I have to make it myself.

What comes to mind is crating her while she's inside which you may be doing anyway. If she's in a crate, at least the problem will be contained. An adverse reaction I've heard about spaying a female is that in her senior years she may develop an incontinence problem because of a lack of hormones, which my female GSD had but was easily taken care of. I don't know if there are any other problems with spaying a female that you don't intend to breed. The pros of spaying may outweigh the cons. Others with more knowledge of medical or pros and cons may be able to better help you should you consider spaying. The other pro to spaying, besides no messy heats, is you don't have to keep a constant eye on her while in heat so she doesn't get bred, which can happen quickly.

Thanks. I am definately spaying her at some point, as she will not be bred. And you are right, she is not out off leash during her heat. My vet raised the same incontinence concern, especially because it is more common in the giant schnauzers. His point is, why are we going to take away her hormones, only to then give her medications to control incontinence. He doesn't want her to be spayed at all, but if I insist, he wants her to go through 2 heat cycles before she is spayed. He thinks it will help her development. He's been right about everything else - limited vaccinations, raw feeding, supplements, that I think he may be correct on the spaying issue too.

Once your dog has passed 6-7 month old range(even up to a year), spaying/neutering is the best option if you don't plan to breed her. I believe Ed has something on the site that says this(might be in one of his videos). Something to do with the hormones in the dog that are needed during that time for growth and overall health.

John
I used to teach spinning classes , no longer do but I had so many spandex shorts and pants(for biking)they are snug and I have giving a lot of them to a friend that had'nt made a decision to spay her golden, so she used the spandex shorts made a hole for the tail and had the doggie under wear underneath but the spandex shorts kept everything in place.I remember her thanking me for them cause nothing else had worked and she was taking her female to work at the time and needed something that would not leave marks on the carpet of her office. You might be able to get some cheap ones at discount type of stores. That's the only idea i can offer.
