So its getting to be that time of year again in South Dakota...winter! My pup is about 15 weeks old and is potty trained but only likes to go when we go outside with him. We've been trying to get him to go out by himself and once in a while he will if we praise him a whole bunch as he's on his way out (then we watch so we know what he's done.) And anytime he won't go w/o us we just let him back inside and wait for him to REALLY have to go. But last night he peed on the deck 3 times, he didn't even make it to the grass... I want him to learn how to go by himself b/c its gettin real cold out there! What should I do? Scold him? He is outside afterall... I understand that maybe he just couldn't make it to the grass but I don't want him to think that's okay. Any suggestions?

I'm sorry, but at 15 weeks, I wouldn't let my puppy go anywhere alone, and, as a puppy, of course he wants to be with you. The only way you can really train him is to be outside right beside him praising him as he does what you want him to. Praising him after he comes back in doesn't do anything for him - he's already forgotten why you are making such a fuss! Come on, brave the cold, and go out with him and act like a fool when he does what you want.
And scolding doesn't help anything, especially when it is long-distance.

Right I understand what you are saying but shouldn't I always be progressing with him? I mean, he already knows to relieve himself outside and he knows how to communicate to us when he does have to go outside, so why wouldn't it be beneficial to continue with his training and move forward? I know 15 weeks doesn't sound that old but he seems to be doing quite well...aside from peeing on the deck last night. And by scolding I simply mean a firm "NO." And if I do put him outside by himself I'm watching like a hawk from a window so I know exactly what he does.

Oh, the demands & responsibilities of raising a housedog, LOL -- and one of them is throwing on your winterized outdoor garb, then taking the baby pup (on a leash) to its "designated potty area" so you'll be sure the poor thing doesn't accidentally relieve itself in any unauthorized place (sorry to say!)...

That's what I meant by scolding him long-distance. IMO, you have to be right there to scold and/or praise.
When you say "he already knows to relieve himself outside", I think perhaps he doesn't quite have it down yet or he wouldn't go on the deck. More patience, Mom, and keep going over the same thing with him outside again and again and again...

Not only is cold weather coming, but it is getting dark a lot earlier, so I think it will go easier on your mind if you are right there with him in, as Candi said, his "designated area." I think you'll find he will respond a lot quicker with you there because all they want are clear-cut instructions/directions/limitations, and then they'll do their best to please us (especially if there are treats involved . Good luck, and let us know how it progresses.

Would like to add my two cents,When training my guy to go behind the shed,I had to put him on his leash and walk him behind there constantly repeating "go to your pen"---I had a pen at the old house but I moved--anyway it didn't take long before he would walk ME out there.Lots of praise when he starts to go,and yes I had to bear the cold, but after a while I was able to open the door and watch from the doorway, still repeating "go to your pen".Now it's the only place he goes.Good luck-he'll catch on.

Yep, my dogs' relief command is Get Busy -- and if the "plumbing needs to be primed" then brisk walking back & forth with tight 180 degree turns (while giving that command) plus a very enthusiastic GOOD BUSY when they relieve themselves, soon does the trick <:-)

one more thought--after he's finished doing his business it's important to bring him right back inside--it's not playtime out there it's pottytime.JMO
