An excellent thread:
http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/4151779/page/0/fpart/1/vc/1
I got a ton of great ideas there, but Tracy Roche's chunky soups in pull-top cans really struck me. This contains food and fluid, all appropriate for humans and dogs both.
Another thing I started doing right away was keeping reserves of all meds in a pouch near the flashlights and candles.
But I'll let the thread speak for itself. <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

You mean you used "search" but left the date range set at one week?
I'm clarifying that, because I think that's what everyone who has trouble with the search function does: they leave the one-week date range instead of expanding it to many weeks, months, or years. <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Living in Hurricane country and having gone through Katrina...
OLD HAND CRANK CAN OPENERS!!! (Worth their weight in DIAMOND!) (P-38 Can Openers, Leatherman, Swiss Army Knives) You would be surprised how many people stock up on canned food... AND THEN THEY CAN'T OPEN IT!
Tupperware! Rubbermaid! Ziploc Bags! Anything that's:
1. Re-sealable
2. Light
3. Portable
4. Keeps the contents fresh and dry!
5. FLOATS!
Calculate about 1 gallon of bottled water a day for each dog depending on size of dog and weather conditions (hot weather = more water).
A good, sturdy leash or harness and collar (of course!). A med pack that takes into account that your canine compatriot may sustain an injury (compresses, ace bandages, gauze wrap, muzzle (for shelters), tweezers (for splinters and glass shards), scissors)
And of course, Microchip that puppy! Collars and tags can get torn off or removed.
Just think logically. Keep enough food and water on hand for you, your family and the dog(s) for a week. That should get you through the storm/disaster.

This is a very good subject I'm glad it was brought up... <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I also live in Louisiana and found myself voluntering to help with lost and found pets...
The shelter which was actually a 4/h barn had close to 8 thousand pets. All dogs, cats, horses, cows and pigs, were all scaned to ck for microchip... 1 out of 50 had identifiable info. brand,tattoo,colar/very few, and microchips. The one barn I helped in had 6 gsds all looked scared wet and sad <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> The one thing I have in my survival pack that was really good and excepted was vienna sausages. <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" /> it's cheep and every kind of pet likes it usually. <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I'm sending this PM because I haven't figured out how to post for everyone to see and share... <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

A Bic lighter or 2, never know when you're stuck out in the middle of nowhere and need to start a fire.
