I have a 13 yr. old mixed terrier. I know this board is primarily for purebred dogs so I hope you don't mind that I mention this little mixed guy. I'd like for him to lose weight. He's on Nutro senior and lite foods and my husband gives him way too many treats. My question is if I switch him to some raw food instad of the Nutro, will he lose weight? Is it safe for him as a senior? Thanks for your help.
The board is not just for purebred dogs - so dont let that bother you. A raw diet is ALWAYS going to be better for a dog no matter what age as long as you do your homework to make sure he gets his vitamines. But with that said - you need to convince your husband that a thin dog is going to live a longer healthier life than a fat dog.
Older dogs that are overwieght and dont actually eat that much food should be tested for thyroid problems. This is a blood test with the Vet. Its not that expensive
what kinds of treats are you talking about? Bacon, ice cream, pepperoni? If you husband is giving fatty treats then getting him to switch over to carrots or other low cal treats is a good place to start. I would be worried that the treats are unbalancing the diet (dog treats are almost all grain, the worst thing for your dog's waistline).

Patsy, when I started my dogs on a raw diet, my oldest dog (Border Terrier) was 11. He wasn't overweight, but within one month, he was a different dog. He acted like a puppy again. His teeth cleaned up within six months. I highly recomend it. As for the excess weight, the best diet in the world wont take the place of to many treats, or as Ed said, a thyroid problem.
